Carnegie Mellon University
U. A. and Helen Whitaker University Professor, Robotics Institute
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (US)

Professor Takeo Kanade received his PhD degree from Kyoto University in 1974. After holding junior faculty positions there, he joined Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 1980, and served as the Director of its world famous Robotics Institute. Currently he holds the title of U.A. and Helen Whitaker University Professor at CMU. He has made pioneering research in computer vision, multi-media, and robotics. Major accomplishments include the Lucas-Kanade algorithm published in 1981 (often referred as the most fundamental and most heavily used algorithm in computer vision), the Navlab 5 (the first autonomous vehicle that drove across America in 1995) and the EyeVision (a 30 robotic cameras system used for NFL Super Bowl in 2001, capturing a 360-degree view replay like Movie Matrix). Dr. Kanade has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, and also to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The awards he received include the Benjamin Franklin Institute Medal and Bower Prize, Okawa Award, C&C Award, ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Pioneer Award, and ICCV Azriel Rosenfeld Lifetime Accomplishment Award.
